How To Participate
All Carnival Camps have a dance hall which is open to everyone on the weekends. Music is played by the groups' drummers. Here you can have fun watching the crowd or even dancing yourself, while learning the carnival song's lyrics that will be sung during the Parade. Anyone and everyone who is interested in the 2010 Gauteng Carnival can come together for dance rehearsals and costume making. This is the best way to make contact with the Carnival. The rehearsals are totally informal and very well attended, a bit like a mega club with people of all ages, including many old people, with lots of dancing. Such a day is definitely an experience not to be missed!
Judging
The Carnival Committee appoints a minimum of three judges each year. The judges take on this role on a volunteer basis. They assess each category based on guidelines issued by the Committee to ensure there is consistency in the way entries are judged.
Judging is based on the following criteria:
- Theme: creative use of music, movement, props and costume
- Choreography: originality, links between sections, effective use of formations
- Synchronisation and Team Work: the team must work together well throughout each section of the dance
- Props/Materials: props are visual and effective and enhance the theme
- Overall Performance/Presentation: performers demonstrate clarity and musicality throughout performance
- Costume and Presentation: use of costumes blends well
- Musicality: movements demonstrate musical interpretation and choice of music is appropriate to theme
- Artistic Expression: movements are strong and clear, surprising and innovative, and fully engage audience's attention
- Difficulty and Skills: Dancers show skill, effort and flexibility. Performers have stamina, making show appear effortless
- Execution: Spacing of dancers is precise in formations. Movements are controlled and synchronised, and in time with the music.
